The benefits of the Cold Pod
Improved recovery
Sports medicine has used cold water immersion
therapy for years to help the recovery of athletes’
muscles. It’s why you often see photos of
footballers or rugby players in ice baths post-match.
Don’t worry; you don’t need to be a burly athlete to reap the benefits, though. Research has shown that while an ice bath increases blood flow to the
skin, the flow to the muscles is reduced.
The reduced muscle blood flow reduces exercise induced muscle damage.
(Gregson et al. 2011)
Pain relief
Pain is a burden, but ice baths can help to lessen it. A study in individuals with gout arthritis found that cold water immersion decreased pain and improved quality of life (Kurniasari et al. 2022). Dipping into your Cold Pod could help to lower inflammation and decrease pain.
Weight loss
According to the Wim Hof Method, cold water immersion can increase your metabolism by up to 16%.The body’s metabolic rate increases in response to being exposed to cold temperatures, and so it tries to produce heat to warm the body up.If practised regularly, cold water immersion may aid weight loss.
Enhanced energy
How do you currently wake yourself up? With a caffeine fix, a quick jog around the block, or a long shower? We all have a preference, but a short burst in icy cold water can be just as effective. That’s because it induces a process called cold thermogenesis, which means the nerve endings in your skin are stimulated, resulting in increased respiration and heart rates as well as oxygen levels. So this leads to increased energy levels.
Increased immunity
Cold water therapy puts your body under stress, and although this may seem counterproductive, this stress is likely to be why immersion is so beneficial. There is some research emerging that suggests that cold water exposure can help to boost our immune cells.
Super sleep
It may seem counterproductive, but a cold plunge before bed may actually be the answer for a great night’s sleep. A recent study found that athletes who immersed themselves in cold water for 10 minutes after evening exercise experienced deeper sleep during the first three hours of sleep and woke up less during the night. (Chavineau et al. 2021)
Stress busting
Stress is something many of us battle daily, but there is some emerging research that suggests cold water therapy could help to reduce the symptoms of anxiety and depression. A 2014 study found that exposure to the cold may have an anti-depressive effect through the stimulation of cold receptors on the skin sending messages to the peripheral nervous system. (Schevchuk, 2014).

The Cold Pod has an easy-to-use draining tap already installed. To drain, attach a standard garden hose or open the tap to drain, depending on where your Cold Pod is set up.
We recommend changing the water in your Cold Pod once per week. You can extend this by adding additives to the water, such as bromine or chlorine tablets, but you should follow the manufacturer’s guidelines.
Like all new health habits, you should consult your doctor before trying anything new.
Absolutely! The Cold Pod has been designed for anyone up to the height of 6ft 7in (2.1m) to use.
You need to drain The Cold Pod by releasing the draining tap. Once empty, we recommend washing the inside with warm, soapy water; give it a rinse, and you’re good to go again.
Current research shows that you should immerse yourself for between 11 and 15 minutes at a temperature between 11-15oC (Machado et al. 2015).
The ‘ideal’ temperature for cold water immersion is between 11 and 15oC, with a mean temperature of 11oC (Machado et al. 2015).
The amount of ice you will need to add is dependent on your cold tap water temperature, the temperature you require, and where you live. For example, if you live in a cold climate, you may not need to add any ice at all.
No, our portable ice pod has been designed so you can use it anywhere, including inside. Just place it somewhere you can drain it easily.
